Glad you are here

Giessen School of Theology (Freie Theologische Hochschule) is a state-accredited evangelical seminary that offers a three-year B.A., a two-year M.A. in theology and a PhD in cooperation with the ETF Leuven and the TU Kampen.

Facts & Information

The FTH, which was founded in 1974, is one of the largest theological seminaries in Germany today. Currently, about 180 male and female students from many countries of the world are taught by sixteen full-time faculty members and various excellent guest teachers. More than 1000 alumni are serving as pastors, teachers, or missionaries around the world, in over 40 countries. The FTH is an exciting place for people who love the Lord and his word. We prepare young people for nothing less than God’s ministry – in church and far beyond.

The academic programs at the FTH are thoroughly Bible-centered. Exegetical studies are based on the Hebrew and Greek texts. This commitment to the Holy Scriptures informs all other disciplines, whether Practical Theology, which offers a variety of courses in expository preaching, biblical counseling, and Christian education, or systematic theology, Church history, evangelism and missions. All focus on the development of biblical methods and strive to make God’s word the standard for the evaluation and treatment of contemporary issues and ethics.

Tuition fees at the seminary are currently only € 250 per month.

Please note, however, that the language of instruction at the FTH is German. In winter semesters English-speaking students who are studying theology (or a related field) and have completed a minimum of four semesters towards a B.A. or are enrolled in a M.A. program can come for an exchange semester to the FTH. If you are interested, please let us know.

If you are interested in any of our programs, please write us in English or German.
We would be glad to hear from you!

„Building for the Future“ – The GST Expansion project

Dear Friends,

The equipping of pastors, missionaries, and teachers for ministry in churches, Christian organizations, and educational institutions is an important task. The future health of the Church depends on doing this task well, and the Giessen School of Theologie has been dedicated to it for over 40 years. Over 1000 graduates are serving in 45 countries around the world. They are working as pastors, church planters, teachers, missionaries, and Bible translators. They are involved in children’s and youth ministry, in charitable work and in evangelistic outreach.

The GST has a passion for God and his word. We are committed to the authority of Scripture, academic excellence, and practical training for effective service. 180 students are currently preparing for ministry here and our faculty has 15 full-time professors – an excellent student/teacher ratio. We place a high priority not only on scholarship, but also on the spiritual formation and personal development of our students.

We do all this without any financial support from the state or a denomination. We rely on donations from friends and supporter for roughly 80% of our budget. This is unheard of in Germany, and yet it’s working because so many people believe in what we’re doing here.

Now we must renovate and expand

  • because we are running out of room – for students in the classrooms, for books in the library, for office space for professors and administrators.
  • because we want to grow. Our goal is that 250 students will be able to study here. The Church needs them.
  • because our older buildings are in bad shape and must be restored or replaced.

Dr. Stephan Holthaus
President, Giessen School of Theology
